Thanks Alan! That solution worked but I would like to note one quirk for future users who may find this useful. If you restore deleted CONTACTS to any folder other than your main Contact folder or a subfolder therein, Outlook 2011 for Mac will not recognize them and will not sync them to your local machine.
Thanks for the help, I recovered over 500 contacts it turns out ... had lost more than I realized!
