I restored the accounts as you suggested and renamed each one. I am happy to report that this did the trick and all is working fine. I have a Lync error on the gavin@bizserv.co.za saying that the name is not unique in AD but, since I don't use Lync, am happy to ignore the error for now on the assumption that AD will sort it out when all the accounts are hard deleted.
